WORLD HEALTH DAY — APRIL 7, 2025
A message from our CEO | Women’s Health Centre
Every year, World Health Day gives us a moment to pause and reflect – not just on the state of global health, but on what is happening right here in our own communities. This year, I want to talk about something that I believe is often misunderstood; women’s health is not a niche issue. It is not a “women’s issue” in the narrow sense. It is a community issue – and it affects every single one of us.
The Reality Behind the Statistics
Across our region, one in three women reports delaying or avoiding healthcare due to cost, distance, or simply not knowing where to turn. That is not a personal failure – it is a systems failure. And the consequences reach far beyond the individual.
When a woman does not have access to timely, appropriate health care – whether that is a routine check-up, mental health support, or specialist advice – her family feels it. Her workplace feels it. Her community feels it. Women are often the primary caregivers, the connective tissue of families and neighbourhoods. Their health is foundational to the wellbeing of those around them.
Access, Equity, and Prevention – Locally
At Health Voyage & the Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre, we see this every day. We see women who have put everyone else first for years – and who are finally walking through our doors, sometimes with conditions that could have been caught much earlier. We see young women who did not know what services were available to them. We see women in midlife navigating transitions with very little support.
What makes me proud is that our team meets these women where they are. We offer:
- Integrated primary care: GPs, nurses, and allied health under one roof
- Accessible, low-cost options for eligible clients
- Care that spans every stage of life: from adolescence through to menopause and beyond
- A welcoming, non-judgmental space where women are listened to
That last point matters more than people might realise. Time and again, we hear from clients that feeling genuinely heard was the turning point – the moment they decided to take their health seriously. That is not a small thing. That is the work we are proud of.
Partnership is Prevention
Health Voyage does not work in isolation. Healthy communities are built together. We are proud to collaborate with local GPs, community health services, councils, and advocacy organisations who share our commitment to equitable access. This World Health Day, I want to acknowledge those partnerships — because the progress we have made is collective.
“Healthy communities are built together. Women’s health isn’t a niche issue – it’s a community one.”
A Call to Our Community
In reflection of World Health Day, I am asking everyone – not just women, not just our clients – to think about the women in their lives. Is there someone who has been putting off a health check? Someone who is not sure what support is available? Someone who might simply benefit from knowing that help is closer than they think?
Share this article. Start a conversation. And if you are a woman in our region – know that Health Voyage – and the Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre, the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinic, headspace Coffs Harbour & Grafton, are here for you at every stage of life.
Women’s health is everyone’s business. And it is our privilege to be part of the solution.
