On Tuesday, 19th May, (Community Engagement Officer, headspace Coffs) and Janene (Partnerships and Cultural Engagement Officer, Health Voyage) were honoured to join the Great Girls Program at the Boambee East Community Centre (BECC) as guest speakers. The session brought together a vibrant group of young women for an evening of connection, learning, and open conversation about mental health and wellbeing.

Alexa and Janene opened the evening by sharing personal experiences of trauma, loss, and the strategies that helped them navigate those challenges. Their honesty created a safe and supportive space for the girls to reflect on their own experiences and ask thoughtful questions.

The group explored the full range of services available through headspace Coffs, including access to two partโ€‘time GPs and a wide network of youthโ€‘focused supports. The headspace wheel sparked lively discussion, and the girls showed impressive knowledgeโ€”earning prizes for correct answers.

They also received:

  • eheadspace contact cards
  • Pamphlets for the 2026 headspace Pushโ€‘Up Challenge
  • Information on youth counselling options, including services tailored for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people
  • New Health Voyage brochures
  • Information bags featuring womenโ€™s health resources, headspace services information, and outreach supports

A significant part of the evening focused on the impact of social media on mental health. The girls bravely raised concerns about disturbing Instagram posts circulating among students. Together, the group unpacked how online behaviour affects selfโ€‘esteem, relationships, and emotional wellbeingโ€”and discussed healthier ways to manage digital spaces.

Alexa and Janene introduced the Young Leaders Council, encouraging the girls to get involved if they want to influence youth mental health services in the Coffs region. Their voices matter, and this council offers a powerful platform to be heard.

The evening also opened the door to a potential collaboration between headspace Coffs and BECC for Youth Mental Health Week in October 2026. Both teams are excited about the possibility of coโ€‘creating events that celebrate resilience, community, and youth empowerment.

The Great Girls Program continues to be a shining example of how community spaces can nurture confidence, connection, and wellbeing in young women. Alexa and Janene were grateful for the warm welcome and inspired by the courage and insight shown by every girl in the room.
