By Glen James, Chair, Health Voyage
Throughout a career spanning 45 years in health – 35 of them in youth and community health – I’ve seen firsthand the gaps that exist, particularly for women and young people. The inequities. The moments where someone falls through the cracks simply because the right care isn’t available in the right place at the right time.
That’s what drew me to Health Voyage.
When I was approached about joining the Board I was considering a number of other opportunities at the time , but there was something different about Health Voyage. Here was an organisation with a clear, unwavering commitment to improving access, equity and outcomes for the communities of Coffs Harbour and the Clarence region – driven not by obligation, but by genuine passion. A pro bono Board. Staff who are here because they believe in the mission, not just the role. A culture that is rare in any sector.
I’ve been Chair for around 18 months now, and what I’m most proud of is this: we have built something that consistently demonstrates impact where it matters most.
Our Endometriosis Clinic is currently recognised as a leading provider of care and service delivery – a testament to our clinicians and to what’s possible when you apply a true clinical care model to complex women’s health. Our headspace centres are changing the trajectories of young people’s lives in a region where that support is desperately needed. And across every service we deliver, you see the same thread: compassion, connection and practical, place-based care that meets people where they are.
As a woman who has spent her career working to close the gaps in health equity, leading an organisation dedicated to women’s and youth health feels like a full-circle moment. The issues Health Voyage addresses – access, equity, person-centred care – are ones I have lived and worked alongside throughout my professional life.
As we approach our 40-year milestone, I find myself reflecting not just on legacy, but on responsibility. As custodians of 40 years of community trust, our Board’s job is to carry that legacy forward – through sustainable growth, meaningful partnerships, and a continued focus on outcomes that truly make a difference.
The original mission that founded Health Voyage remains just as relevant today as it did four decades ago. That tells you everything.
I’m proud to serve this organisation. I’m proud of the executive team, the staff, and the community that surrounds them. And I’m excited about what comes next.
If you’ve been touched by Health Voyage’s work – as a client, a supporter, a community member – I’d love to hear your story. These connections are what remind us why this work matters.
